about

As a songwriter without a band, or any real opportunities to play live, making records is the only outlet for my music. Every night, as I close my eyes to fall asleep, I play one of these songs in my head and imagine how it will sound on the stereo. I’ve done this for as long as I can remember. That world inside my head is also a world I share with all my favorite records, with all the musicians and songwriters who speak to me through my headphones. Apologies for the sentimentality, but making records is my way of communing with those kindred spirits, sending my own measly signals back out into the universe, hoping to connect. You’ll hear echoes of other records here because all I ever wanted was to be a part of rock n’ roll and pop music.

This album has been a long time coming. I wrote the earliest song here—"Pick Up Where We Left Off"—in 2002, when I lived in New York. Another six songs were written in London, between 2002 and 2010, when I lived there, went to grad school, played in a couple bands, got married, and had my first kid. I wrote the remainder here in Iowa over the past few years, as I got back into recording, and this album started to take shape.

Even after I started recording these songs, the process took a long time. A full-time job, two kids, not a ton of disposable income...you get it. A year in Philadelphia in an apartment with hilariously thin walls didn't help either. It turns out that the twin contingencies of a pandemic lockdown and a summer between jobs created the perfect conditions for finally finishing the thing.

Even though the album's long gestation means that it contains songs from a long stretch of my music-making life, I worked hard to create an album that works as an album. The songs have changed over the years, sometimes radically. The album you hold in your digital hands is a product of where I am right now, and it's one that I hope meets you right where you are.
